How to Install and Configure Syncthing
Syncthing is free software that lets you share folders with other people or computers over the Internet. When a file is changed on one of the devices, it's also updated on the others in real time. In this video from KeepItTechie, Josh shows how to install and configure Syncthing, which can replace commercial services like Dropbox.
Unlike cloud storage, Syncthing does not rely on a central server to provide synchronization between different machines. Instead, it uses a peer-to-peer connection between the devices that is secure and reliable.
To start syncing, open Syncthing on one of the devices and click the green "Add Device" button. In the next window, select the folder that you want to synchronize. If you want to add more folders, repeat the process for each one. You can also customize settings such as whether or not to keep file version histories and how often Syncthing will check for changes.
Once you're finished, press Save and Syncthing will begin syncing the folders that you added. When everything is synchronized, the Folders and Remote Devices sections will show a green "Up to Date" message.
Syncthing is a portable open source replacement for proprietary sync and cloud services. It is safe, secure and decentralized and respects your privacy. It works locally on the network and remotely over the Internet with excellent encryption.
The Syncthing website has extensive documentation and features a lively discussion forum. It requires a small amount of disk space to install and run. It also runs on a BitTorrent-style network, so it needs a fast and stable network connection to operate.
